Metal Tile Texture Study

Zak recently finished a new ‘simplified’ metal tile set. I used our nifty level editor to compare these 2 different tile sets next to one another and take a screen capture.  The left block is the old detailed metal textures we were using.  These looked great in static images, but as we’ve started working on bigger levels, we’ve found that having so many different tiles is annoying and makes the tiles even *more* apparent since it is so hard to blend the detailed textures together.  Ultimately, the simpler tile set to the left ends up looking better in game because you cannot easily see the 32×32 tile grid.  There’s also fewer textures to worry about matching up which makes level design a lot faster.
